Zero humbleness: Michigan QB Bryce Underwood sparks outrage after claiming he's the best player

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood smiles during warmups ahead of the New Mexico game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has divided the fanbase after boldly declaring he believes he’s “the best player to ever come out of Michigan.” The statement, made during a youth football camp interview with WDIV Local 4 News, was later shared on JBook via X and quickly fueled debate.

Bryce Underwood explained his mindset. "I want to prove to myself that I am what I think I am. I feel like I'm the best player to ever come out of Michigan, and now it's time to show it ... 'Cause I've worked for it," he said.

He added that under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, he is working smarter in preparation for the upcoming season after a mixed freshman year.

Those claims stand in contrast to his freshman production. Underwood completed 202 of 335 passes for 2,428 yards, throwing 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions, with a completion rate of 60.3%.

Bryce Underwood himself arrived in Ann Arbor as one of the most hyped recruits in recent memory, ranked the nation’s No. 1 quarterback prospect out of high school. But could not back it up with numbers.

Prior to this, ex-NFL All-Pro safety Eric Weddle had criticized Underwood’s ability.

"I don't think he could throw or play quarterback, so we'll see," Weddle said during an appearance on the “Zero 2 Sixty” podcast.

Zak Herbstreit, son of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, addressed the statement on his Off Script podcast.

"The best player to ever come out of Michigan, that's a loaded statement," Zak said.

"I don't know if that means the best player to ever come out of the University of Michigan, or the best player to come out of the state of Michigan. You've only played one season, and you're not even done with your tenure at Michigan.”

Michigan has a long quarterback lineage, from Tom Brady to Denard Robinson, with each leaving a distinct mark on the program. Those comparisons added extra weight to Bryce Underwood's statement and helped fuel discussion in the comments.

Social media splits over Bryce Underwood's confidence

Many fans questioned the timing of Underwood's comments in that interview with WDIV Local 4 News, pointing to his freshman production and arguing that he has more to prove before making such a bold claim.

"This kid has zero humbleness to him. It's so bizarre how self absorbed he is even after failing so miserably year 1," one fan wrote.

Others responded by comparing Underwood's statement to Michigan legend Tom Brady, whose long list of accomplishments made the comparison difficult for many fans to accept.

Brady has recorded over 4,000 yards with a passer rating of 134.9 during his college career and has been part of the Big Ten.

"Sir, Tom Brady would like to have a chat," another fan posted.

Not everyone viewed the remarks as arrogance. Some believed Underwood was expressing confidence in himself rather than dismissing other great players.

"Taken out of context, he really wasn't being arrogant if you hear the full clip," one supporter wrote.

Another fan welcomed the challenge Underwood set for himself.

“He can believe whatever the f*** he wants, as can any of you. He also said he’s got to prove that and looks forward to the challenge. Good for him. Go Blue,” another supporter wrote.

While others reacted with sarcasm.

"Yeah, and I'm an astronaut…. This imbecile has ZERO self awareness, none whatsoever."  a critic wrote in sarcasm.

With last season's completion rate of 60.3%, can Underwood's play this season match the confidence behind his words? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
