Bergen Catholic's Trey Tagliaferri (12) warms up on the field before a Non-Public, Group A semifinal football game between Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic at Granatell Stadium in Ramsey on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.
A recent update has shaken up the college football recruiting landscape. 2028 four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri has withdrawn his commitment to Notre Dame due to his rapid change of heart.
Tagliaferri had privately committed to the Fighting Irish over Father’s Day weekend before announcing it to the world on June 25. College football reporter Hayes Fawcett reported this on X.
“BREAKING: Four-Star QB Trey Tagliaferri has Decommitted from Notre Dame, he tells me for @Rivals,” Fawcett wrote. “The 6’2 190 QB committed to the Fighting Irish 6 days ago. He’s ranked as the No. 11 QB in the 2028 Rivals300.”
According to Greg Smith of On3, the news comes a mere six days after the elite signal-caller from Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic made his pledge to Marcus Freeman's program public.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect is coming off a solid sophomore campaign at Bergen Catholic. In 11 games during his sophomore season, Tagliaferri put up eye-popping numbers by completing 131 of 211 passes for 2,215 yards.
He flashed elite efficiency and decision-making on the field, with 29 touchdowns against just three interceptions. His season earned him several postseason accolades across the state.
Tagliaferri was named to the 2025 N.J. Football All-State third-team offense, the 2025 Jersey Sports Zone’s Non-Public Offense, the 2025 All-Bergen County first-team offense, and the 2025 Super Football All-Division first-team offense.
With Tagliaferri back on the market, his recruitment reopens as one of the most highly anticipated storylines for his class.
What will be next for Trey Tagliaferri?
The Oklahoma Sooners have always been the dream school for 2028 quarterback recruit Tagliaferri. Even though Oklahoma hesitated to recruit him early on, everything changed once he committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Reports from Ryan Roberts of AtoZ Sports state that the Sooners began pushing hard to flip his commitment.
“I expect Tagliaferri to land with the Sooners before too long,” Roberts added, “barring something completely unforeseen. It could happen anytime.”
While some critics might blame name, image, and likeness (NIL) money for this sudden shift, the reality is different. Oklahoma was always Tagliaferri's preferred destination.
Furthermore, Notre Dame chose to walk away rather than overpay. Reports indicated that the quarterback's camp was incredibly difficult to deal with, which frustrated them. Plus, the Tagliaferri family alienated the Irish coaching staff, per Roberts.
Barring a massive surprise, Tagliaferri is expected to officially join the Oklahoma Sooners very soon.
