The battle between Texas Tech and the NCAA may be heading far beyond the football field. Quarterback Brendan Sorsby's denied reinstatement has now led to serious legal discussions.
Investigations revealed that the QB violated gambling policies during his college career, due to which the NCAA decided to deny Sorsby's eligibility for the 2026 season. His lawyers have asked for a two-game suspension, which the NCAA denied.
"We believe the right thing to do is not to ruin this young man's college career for something that happened four years ago," said Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt, while attending the Big 12 spring meetings in Frisco, Texas.

"There's penalties for everything that you do, and we would accept that and expect that, but at the same time, let's help this young man who has been very vulnerable and has admitted to some wrongdoings. Let's give him a second chance and help him," he added.
Sorsby's legal team has already argued that the NCAA failed to properly consider his recovery efforts and mental health condition while handling the reinstatement process.
FOXSports reported that Sorsby admitted to placing bets, including on Indian Football, during his time there, though there were no allegations of game manipulation or betting against his own team.
The NCAA's gambling rules have stern policies in college athletics. Student-athletes can face permanent bans for betting on their own teams, regardless of whether the bet impacted competition.
For the same reason, the NCAA has held a firm stance despite growing criticism around modern sports betting.
Sorsby has one year of eligibility remaining. He was expected to be a major piece of Texas Tech's 2026 campaign after transferring from Cincinnati. He was seen as a future NFL prospect.
A hearing regarding Behren Sorsby’s temporary injunction is already set for June 1 in Lubbock County District Court.
Reports also indicate that if either side challenges the ruling afterward, the case could quickly move to the Texas Seventh Court of Appeals.
Brendan Sorsby Completed His Rehab For Gambling Addiction At Algamus, Arizona
Brendan Sorsby completed a 35-day inpatient rehabilitation program for gambling addiction at Algamus in Goodyear, Arizona. Sorsby has filed for injunctive relief in Texas as he attempts to regain eligibility before the 2026 season.
"While I accept responsibility for my behaviour and know that I have a lot of work ahead of me, for the first time in many years I feel more free and no longer fully at the mercy of my addiction," wrote Sorsby on an Instagram post.
The QB released a statement acknowledging his recovery journey and the support he received during treatment.
Texas Tech officials continue to back the QB despite the NCAA denying his appeal. Texas Tech's president, Lawrence Schovanec, outlined a detailed care plan for Sorsby.
It included his therapy, compliance monitoring, financial oversight, and addiction recovery through the university's Center for Students in Addiction Recovery.
