Sooners' QB John Mateer links up with the QB coach who helped Josh Allen

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has spent part of his offseason working with renowned quarterback coach Josh Hess, whose client list includes Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen.

"He's worked with several different high-profile quarterback trainers, including Josh Allen's quarterback trainer, Josh Hess, who does all sorts of biometrics and all this scientific stuff," George Stoia from On3 said on 'The Paul Finebaum Show.

According to Stoia, the offseason work is focused on improving Mateer's throwing mechanics.

"It's supposed to fix John's throwing motion, make him a better passer, and get him back looking like the quarterback that he was before he broke his hand," Stoia added on @espncfb (YouTube).

Hess is known for using biomechanics and data-driven analysis to improve QB efficiency, focusing on throwing mechanics, body movement, and consistency.

The work is aimed at helping Mateer regain the fluid throwing motion he displayed before suffering a broken throwing hand during the 2025 season.

Before transferring to Oklahoma, Mateer threw for Washington State in 2024, throwing for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while adding 826 rushing yards and 15 rushing scores.

He was injured during his first season with the Sooners. They are now expecting Mateer to lead an improved offense in 2026.

For Mateer, this could be a final step towards that form which once made him one of college football's most dangerous QBs.

However, Oklahoma knows that improving the starter alone won't solve every problem.

Sooners counting on a healthy John Mateer in 2026

John Mateer enters the 2026 season as Oklahoma's unquestioned starting quarterback, but the Sooners remain cautious about their depth behind him.

"Mateer, though, underwent surgery for a hand injury after the Auburn game," wrote Carson Field of Oklahoma Sooner on SI. "He only missed the Sooners’ lopsided win against Kent State, but when he returned, he wasn’t nearly as effective."

Over his final eight games, Mateer threw for 1,670 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing just 59.4 percent of his passes.

The team's biggest concern is not Mateer's talent but the lack of experienced depth if he is forced to miss the game.

Keeping Mateer healthy is the priority of the Sooners throughout the season as they depend on having their veteran from Week 1 through the postseason.
