Texas Tech kept its Women's College World Series dream alive with a dramatic victory over UCLA in Oklahoma City, and few were celebrating harder than former Red Raider Patrick Mahomes. Watching from afar, the Chiefs' superstar could hardly contain his excitement.
“Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! LETS GO!!!!!!!!!@TexasTechSB”
Texas Tech was winning the game 6-3 near the end. Suddenly, UCLA hit big home runs to tie the score 6-6. Because it was a tie, the game had to keep going into extra innings.
Texas Tech broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the 9th inning. Kaitlyn Terry, who transferred from UCLA to Texas Tech, hit a huge go-ahead RBI double. Moments later, UCLA made a mistake on defense during a grounder, which allowed Terry to run home and score as well. These two plays gave Texas Tech a crucial 8-6 lead.
UCLA had one last chance to hit in the bottom of the 9th, and they fought back hard. Jordan Woolery hit an RBI single against Terry, cutting Texas Tech's lead down to 8-7 and putting the tying runs on base.
With the game on the line, Texas Tech brought star pitcher NiJaree Canady back into the circle to finish it. Canady stepped up under immense pressure, forcing a harmless flyout and striking out the final batter to seal the historic 8-7 victory for Patrick Mahomes' beloved Red Raiders.
Patrick Mahomes' History With Texas Tech
Patrick Mahomes is famous for being a superstar quarterback in the NFL, but he never forgets where he started. Before playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes played college football for the Texas Tech Red Raiders from 2014 to 2016.
He was amazing in the college field. In his very last season there, he threw for over 5,000 yards and scored 53 total touchdowns. This incredible success helped him get drafted 10th overall.
Even though he is now a big professional star, Mahomes still treats Texas Tech like his own family. He shows his love in various ways.
He and his wife, Brittany, donated $5 million to the school in 2024 to help make the football stadium better. He also created a special program called "Team Mahomes" to help college athletes earn money through modern brand deals.
When the women’s softball team was playing in big tournaments last year, he surprised them with custom jackets and sneakers to show his support. He is always finding ways to make the students feel special.
Currently, Mahomes is recovering much faster than expected from his ACL injury in December and plans to be back on the field by Week 1 for their opener against divisional rivals, the Denver Broncos.
