The Kansas City Chiefs look like their usual dominant selves now that Patrick Mahomes is back participating in team activities.

Mahomes took part in OTAs starting Tuesday, participating in individual throwing drills and a 7-on-7 passing period. When the media was permitted to attend Day 3 of practice, the Chiefs quarterback gave a humorous response when asked about his rehab process.

"You come in early in the morning, rehab and kind of get everything moving around. Then go to meetings. Come down, warm up before practice, go to practice, and then come out of practice," Mahomes said. "Usually, I'd be rehabbing right now. Brett's [Veach] got me in here."

The Chiefs' star didn't participate in the 11-on-11 Team Period as he is in the fifth month of his recovery from his injury from last season. During the activities, he wore a black protective sleeve over his left leg.

“As a competitor, I want to be out there with my guys...All I can do is execute the day and do whatever I can to be better that day," Mahomes added. "We’ve set these checkpoints and goals of where I want to be at, and I’ve gotten to those. Now I continue to do that at the right pace.”

Mahomes fully commits himself to his comeback in September against the Denver Broncos. To be present on the field in week 1, he has been working out for 7-8 hours a day.

As OTA progress continues under Andy Reid, the head coach maintains a positive outlook on Mahomes’ workload and recovery.

Andy Reid Opens Up on Patrick Mahomes’ Status Ahead of Chiefs OTAs

The Chiefs enter OTAs after a disappointing season that kept them out of the playoffs for only the second time under head coach Andy Reid.

According to Newsweek’s Cole Sullivan, the team made several roster changes this offseason, keeping Mahomes as the focus. Even after the injury, Mahomes has returned to throwing during OTAs, showing good progress in his rehabilitation process.

Andy Reid shared an update on Mahomes’ current workload and the medical supervision around him.

“You get him out there throwing; it’s rehab… He’s doing partial practice. He’s busted his tail to put himself in this position… We’ve got good communication with the doctors. They keep a close eye on him, and we listen to them,” Reid said Thursday.

Mahomes has been increasing his activity as part of a controlled recovery plan that aims to prepare him for full participation in the upcoming season.

While the timeline for his complete return is not fully confirmed, the expectation remains that he could be ready for Week 1 if his rehabilitation continues without much concern.
