"Not far behind": Bears Legend Makes Bold Caleb Williams Comparison to Patrick Mahomes

Comparing any quarterback to Patrick Mahomes is a high bar to clear. But Chicago Bears legend Mike Singletary did just that while discussing Caleb Williams' potential.

During his appearance on Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Singletary was asked who he would pick in an entire league redraft. Without hesitation, he chose Patrick Mahomes. What's more, he compared Bears QB Caleb Williams to the Chiefs' legendary QB.

"When Patrick gets in the huddle, they listen... and to me, that's respect. That means that kid is working hard, he's leading the way... And that's why Patrick Mahomes, and that's why the kid in Chicago is not far behind," said Singletary.

Overall, Mahomes still has the edge in ball security over Williams. During his first 30 games across 2018 and 2019, the Chiefs QB recorded 9,128 yards and 76 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions.

In comparison, Williams recorded 7,483 yards passing, 47 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions across 34 games in 2024 and 2025.

The kind of winning football that Singletary was talking about came to fruition in Williams' second year. The QB recorded 27 touchdowns and cut the number of sacks from 68 to 24. The 11-6 record carried the Bears to the NFC divisional playoffs.

Bears HC Ben Johnson has also praised Williams' growth over the past year and his command of the offense. This is the same quality of leadership that Singletary cited when providing the Mahomes comparison.

Of course, that quality of leadership comes with an area Williams himself has cited as unfinished business.

Caleb Williams Has Unfinished Business Heading Into Year Three

Concerns about Caleb Williams' 58.1% passing completion rate in 2025 persisted. Per Bears Wire reporter Mike Pendleton, the quarterback discussed it openly during minicamp.

"It's just get the completion percentage up, keep the offense on the field more, score as many points as possible, be the highest-scoring offense, because that's my part in the team, going out there and orchestrating it and being able to go out there and score whether it's handoffs or passes, whatever, that doesn't matter," said Williams.

The QB seemed focused on increasing his percentage, which slipped from his rookie rate of 62.5% and ranked significantly lower than league leader Drake Maye's 72% in the Patriots' Super Bowl season.

However, Williams stressed that the turnover side of that equation is equally important.

"It's just being able to put up as many points as possible to help our team win as many games as possible and then keeping the turnovers very low," the Bears QB added.

Williams is aiming at the top-scoring team in the league, and Johnson has set a goal of a 70% completion rate for him by 2026.

If Williams hits that goal, the gap between him and Mahomes will look a little smaller.
