The NFL has handed out its first round of fines for the 2026 season, and Stefon Diggs and Jahmyr Gibbs are among the players who made the list after Week 1. A total of 20 players were fined following 2,568 plays across the opening slate.

Diggs was fined $14,926 after his first touchdown for the Washington Commanders came with a costly celebration. The wide receiver jumped onto the goal post and wrapped his legs around it after scoring against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders went on to lose 24-22.

“You just got to be smarter, we’ve got to know situational football,” Jayden Daniels said, according to Fox Sports.

Diggs’ fine matches the NFL’s standard amount for a first unsportsmanlike conduct offense. A second offense would bring a $20,897 fine.

"That's on me for not reiterating that in the huddle, we just got to be smart," Daniels said after the game, according to Fox Sports. "There's a time and place for everything and celebrations."

Gibbs, meanwhile, received the biggest fine from the Week 1 list. The Lions running back was fined $23,027 for use of the helmet during Detroit’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

The incident came during Gibbs’ second rushing touchdown of the game. He lowered his helmet into Saints cornerback Quincy Riley during the third quarter, although he was not flagged on the play. The NFL later issued the fine.

San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also fined $20,033 for use of the helmet, while Rams linebacker Nate Landman received an $11,111 fine for the same violation.

Other Week 1 fines included $17,911 for Dolphins cornerback Chris Johnson for a hip-drop tackle, $9,425 for Bills defensive back Sam Franklin for a blindside block and $7,087 for Packers defensive back Evan Williams for a hit on a defenseless player.

The Cowboys had three players fined, while Chiefs guard Trey Smith, 49ers fullback Jake Tonges and Titans receiver Calvin Ridley were also among those penalized.

The NFL’s 2026 fine list also comes with a new player-safety rule.

A player can receive a suspension after three violations of the same one of five specified safety rules, including hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players and blindside blocks.

For Diggs, though, the fine was only part of the story. His celebration also changed what Washington could do after his touchdown.

That made it 17-16. Washington later got another chance to tie the game with a two-point try, but the attempt failed as Philadelphia held on for a 24-22 win.

Quinn later confirmed that he spoke with Diggs about the play, making it clear the veteran receiver knew the situation called for better awareness.
