NFL debates around legendary quarterbacks never disappear, especially when it comes to two iconic names like Aaron Rodgers and John Elway. With Rodgers' retirement announcement, comparisons between the two quarterbacks have triggered a debate across NFL media.
NFL analyst Dov Kleiman shared a clip on X from ESPN’s First Take where Michael Wilbon defended John Elway during a debate with Stephen A. Smith.
"Aaron Rodgers in no way measured up physically to the talent John Elway had. Never in his wildest dreams…you need to go get on YouTube or something."
Smith pointed out that the physical talent of Rodgers was the best in the league. On the other hand, Wilbon didn’t agree and started pointing towards Elway.
Later in the debate, Smith called Wilbon's take ridiculous and continued his argument, saying he was referring to physical talent, not career resume.
Elway spent his entire 16-year NFL career with the Denver Broncos from 1983 to 1998. He retired in 1999 after finishing his career with 51,475 passing yards, 300 touchdown passes, nine Pro Bowl selections, and the 1987 NFL MVP award.
Elway also led Denver to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII, with the second title coming alongside a Super Bowl MVP award. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
Rodgers entered the NFL in 2005 and has played for the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Across his career, Rodgers has recorded more than 66,000 passing yards and 527 touchdown passes.
He has earned four NFL MVP awards and 10 Pro Bowl selections during a career that has stretched into a 21st season. Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers during the 2010 season.
One major difference between the two quarterbacks is longevity and statistical production. Rodgers has played longer and produced significantly higher passing totals, while Elway’s career is often remembered for postseason success and leading Denver to five Super Bowl appearances.
Rodgers’ Retirement Plans Continue to Raise Questions
Rodgers’ decision came just a week after signing a one-year contract with the Steelers, which surprised many fans.
The announcement caught analysts off guard, given Rodgers' history of shifting positions.
"I believe that he believes it when he says it," Mike Florio said. "2027 is a different year. We don't know how he'll feel based on how things go this year… that sets up a farewell tour."
"It's going to be all about Aaron Rodgers everywhere the Steelers go… he could have left things vague, and he usually does leave things vague. That's what's out of character for him. He's given up certainty. It is going to be his last year."
As Rodgers prepares for his final season, questions around his legacy will be raised. Rodgers remains one of the league’s most discussed figures.
The Steelers must now pivot their strategy to address the impending void at quarterback.
