When Darian Mensah entered the transfer portal, many observers wondered what drew him to Miami. The star quarterback had plenty of options on the table, but one thing about the Hurricanes made the choice obvious. 

Speaking at the ACC Kickoff on July 15, 2026, Mensah explained why he decided to play for head coach Mario Cristobal. His decision came down to a proven track record and how the program handled its passing game over the last two years. 

“Seeing what the last two quarterbacks did at Miami was a huge factor," Mensah said at the ACC Kickoff. “Seeing the freedom that (offensive coordinator Shannon) Dawson lets the quarterback play with within his offense was also something that was attractive to me,” Mensah stated. 

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Mensah felt that Dawson’s quarterback-friendly approach gave him the best chance to grow. 

Under Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, previous passers enjoyed their time in a system designed to maximize their skills. Mensah recognized the environment as the ideal spot to chase a national championship while building his NFL draft profile.

Mensah’s departure from Duke was the biggest story of the offseason. Duke even filed a lawsuit over his NIL agreement. When asked about the same, Mensah said that "business is business," and added that his new teammates welcomed him right away. 

The focus is now on how Mensah's skill set fits into Miami's offense.

During the 2025 campaign at Duke, according to CFB Stats, Mensah threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He led the ACC in passing yards. His play helped Duke to its first outright ACC championship since 1962.

Before his time at Duke, Mensah showed similar promise during a productive run at Tulane. He wanted another year to improve his game, reduce turnover risks, and compete for a national title on a bigger stage.

Cam Ward and Carson Beck established a clear path for success. Ward won the ACC Player of the Year award and the Davey O'Brien Award. He finished as a Heisman finalist and became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. 

Beck followed that up in 2025 by throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns. He led Miami to a 13-3 record and a spot in the CFP National Championship game. 

Over the past two seasons, Miami has held a 23-6 record using this transfer strategy. Cristobal has built a roster model that pairs experienced transfer quarterbacks with elite surrounding talent while younger prospects develop in the background.

The head coach expressed that the program feels beyond blessed to bring Mensah in right after Ward and Beck.
