Former Jets QB Passes Away After Cancer Battle at 57

The football world is mourning the loss of a former Jet and college legend. has passed away at 57 following a battle with colon cancer, his alma mater, the University of Louisville, announced Friday.
ESPN reporter Rich Cimini paid his tribute to Late Browning Nagle. He posted a brief message on his X.
“Sad news: Former Jets QB Browning Nagle has passed away after a cancer battle, per reports," Cimini's X post read. "He was 57. A second-round pick in ‘91, following a huge Fiesta Bowl performance for @LouisvilleFB. Started the ‘92 season for the #Jets. A nice guy. Fun loving. One of the best arms I’ve ever seen.”
The University of Louisville's football program first announced the tragic news.
“We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great,” the statement by Louisville football read. “His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time.”
Nagle was drafted by the New York Jets in 1991 (34th overall) and started 13 games in 1992, throwing for 2,280 yards with 7 touchdowns and 17 interceptions as the team went 4–12 before his release.
In 1994, Nagle briefly played for the Indianapolis Colts, starting their regular-season finale against the Buffalo Bills and completing 8 passes for 69 yards in a 10–9 win, before later spending two seasons as a backup with the Atlanta Falcons.
He left the NFL in 1999 for the Arena Football League, playing for the Orlando Predators and Buffalo Destroyers, where he recorded 2,129 yards, 35 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
His decorated collegiate career included a 1991 Fiesta Bowl MVP award.
He starred at the University of Louisville under Howard Schnellenberger, throwing for 4,653 yards and 32 touchdowns and leading the Louisville Cardinals to a 1991 Fiesta Bowl win, with 451 yards and three touchdowns.
After his AFL stint ended in 2000, he quietly built a second act that spanned over two decades, carving out a 20+ year career in medical device sales.
From early roles at Smith & Nephew to managerial positions with Medtronic, and eventually a long run as a senior corporate sales rep at Wright Medical Technology from 2012 to 2026.
Browning Nagle later battled cancer and is survived by his wife, Mallie Jo, and their children.
Tributes Pour in for Browning Nagle on Social Media
Alongside Rich Cimini, current University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, who once served as Browning Nagle’s backup with the Cardinals, also paid tribute to his former teammate on X.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with #7 Browning Nagle, his wife Michelle, and his entire family today. A true Cardinal great! We will all miss him very much. Love you buddy!” he wrote in his tribute.
Even the New York Jets paid tribute to him on X, paying their tributes.
“Condolences to the family, friends and former teammates of Browning Nagle who passed away. Browning was a 2nd Rd pick of the Jets in 1991 and spent 3 seasons here. Rest in peace Browning,” the comment read.
Some fans also focused on how soon he was lost to this world.
"Rest in peace 🙏 Gone too soon at 57. Prayers for his family," a comment read.
As tributes continue to pour in for Browning Nagle, the numbers tell one story, but the impact he left across locker rooms and lives tells another. Gone at 57, his legacy now lives on through the game he loved and the family he leaves behind.
