The Kansas City Chiefs have extended Patrick Mahomes' contract, tying up the quarterback until 2033. The new deal is worth $504.75 million, making him the first-ever NFL player to secure a half-billion-dollar contract in history.
Shannon Sharpe, in his podcast Nightcap, questioned six-time Pro Bowler Chad Johnson regarding the fact that the Chiefs extended Mahomes the contract amid his recovery from the season-ending injury suffered during the 2025 season. Johnson did not hesitate with his answer.
"Patrick Mahomes right now, arguably still while active, probably is top five, top three, depending on who you ask, quarterbacks to ever play this game, and you know, as long as he's healthy, as long he's there, he always gives you a chance to win Kansas City Chiefs are going to always be in contention," Johnson said.
The Chiefs added two years and $239.05 million to his existing contract, pushing the total worth of the deal to $504.75 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. With incentives included, the number can climb to $522.25 million.
The deal will also put Mahomes alone at the top of the NFL pay scale. Once the new money kicks in ahead of the 2027 season, he will be making $64 million per year, moving past Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's current mark of $60 million annually.
After already making roughly $232 million during his NFL career, his number will rise past $730 million by the time his contract expires following the 2033 season, as per Bleacher Report.
Then again, Mahomes has been rewriting quarterback contracts for years. He entered the league on a four-year rookie deal worth $16.4 million before signing a groundbreaking 10-year, $450 million extension with Kansas City in 2020.
Chad Johnson Says Everything Starts With The Quarterback
Johnson's argument went beyond what Mahomes has already accomplished on the field. For him, the bigger point was how much an elite quarterback can change a franchise.
"You understand how important your quarterback is especially that position," Johnson said during the discussion. He pointed to teams that continue to struggle year after year, arguing that many of them are still searching for consistency under center.
That idea is not much different from how the Chiefs see their star quarterback.
In a statement shared by NFL.com, general manager Brett Veach called Mahomes a "once-in-a-lifetime player" and credited him with helping lead the franchise into the most successful era in team history, per NFL.com.
Taken together, those comments help explain why the Chiefs were comfortable making such a massive commitment. Mahomes is now the NFL's first half-billion-dollar player.
