Doug Flutie Reveals How He Got Sued Because of Trash-Talking

Being a quarterback, of course Doug Flutie was going to throw a football, as he did at Campanelli Stadium prior to his pitching stint on Doug Flutie Day on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

While appearing on Ozoon Canada’s Flutie vs Stegall segment with Arash Madani, the former NFL and CFL quarterback Doug Flutie revealed a trash-talking incident with defensive lineman Dave Chaytors on the gridiron that got him sued.

“I ran a quarterback sneak or something, and one of the players on the other team, who I knew was a steroid guy,” Flutie said. “Was all he got his hand up under my face mask, and it's like digging his claws into my face, and I'm shaking it off.”

The infamous explosive trash talk took place in the CFL on October 27, 1996.

“You know, you're stuck, and you finally get out of there, and we go at it a little bit on the field,” Flutie recalled the incident. “...Someone asked me what the altercation was about. I said, ‘Well, he just had a little roid rage under the pile or whatever.’ I ended up getting sued.”

Many CFL players did not like Flutie, they believed that he was arrogant because of his celebrity and talent, per JC Abbott of 3Down Nation.

On the other hand, Chaytors holds a reputation for being nasty and dirty like any lineman in CFL history.

Flutie also made similar claims during the match that the Lions players were unethically targeting him during the match.

In the post-match presser, Flutie made the claim of ‌steroid usage for enhancing the performance by Chaytors.

“They are just doing whatever they feel like doing on the field, and Dave Chaytors is leading the group,” Flutie said to those watching live on TV. “People are going to get hurt out there.”

As the claims spread, Chaytors denied the accusations of any steroid usage in his professional career and filed a defamation suit against Flutie.

The explosive feud concluded behind closed doors with a legal settlement and a formal apology.

Other than the controversy, Flutie has had a successful career on the gridiron.

Doug Flutie Built a Lasting Legacy Across the NFL and CFL

QB Doug Flutie floated between the NFL and CFL to pursue his aspirations of playing professional football, and he did make a big name for himself in the leagues.

Doug Flutie was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 11th round (No. 285 overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft.

He went on to build one of football's most unique careers across both the NFL and CFL.

Between 1985 and 2005, Flutie suited up for the New Jersey Generals, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts, Buffalo Bills, and San Diego Chargers.

Over his professional career, Flutie threw for 58,179 yards while completing 4,286 of 7,286 passes. He finished with 369 passing touchdowns and 237 interceptions.

Flutie's trophy cabinet reflected his impact.

The six-time MOP and three-time Grey Cup champion, Flutie, later captured NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

His success in both leagues cemented his status as one of football's most accomplished quarterbacks.
