Cowboys Legend Compares Dak Prescott to Tom Brady & Makes Clear Demand

Dak Prescott's résumé is packed with milestones, but his legacy with the Dallas Cowboys is measured differently. As debates continue over where the longtime Cowboys quarterback belongs among the franchise's greats, one team icon has offered a telling comparison to Tom Brady

Hall of Famer Michael Irvin was blunt in his assessment, in a clip shared by the DLLS Sports fan account on X.

"When you look at Dak's numbers, put them up to Tom Brady's numbers, any numbers, Dak is right there," the 3x Super Bowl winner said. "It's just right here in the playoffs, you gotta get over that hump. And Dak has to do it this year."

The Brady comparison sets the bar that high for Irvin. Although Brady's career spanned over 20 seasons, comparing the first decade of each quarterback's career reveals that Prescott's production holds up well.

The Cowboys star has delivered four 30-plus-touchdown seasons, similar to Brady's role with the Patriots, where he came up with two seasons in which he scored 30-plus touchdowns in his first ten years.

But the conversation always stalls at Prescott's postseason record. He has not advanced beyond the divisional round, and in Dallas, legacy is measured in Lombardi Trophies.

Prescott holds a 2-5-0 record, racking up 1962 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven games.

Irvin, who won three Super Bowls in Dallas with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, knows exactly what separates good from legendary in that organization. In the Cowboys, Aikman held an 11-4- 0 record in the playoffs with 3849 yards and 23 touchdowns.

So, his Brady comparison is a standard, not a compliment, and his demand is clear.

The window is open, with a revamped receiving corps around him and analysts projecting a strong Dallas offense in 2026. A deep run in January turns the whole conversation about his career, and Irvin knows it.

But there’s a catch to that window, and it’s nothing to do with roster construction.

Dak Prescott’s Biggest Obstacle in 2026 Might Be the Calendar

Going into 2026, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report had a worry, and it's based solely on the pattern of Prescott's play and availability in even years versus odd years since 2019.

According to his analysis, in odd-numbered years since 2019, Prescott has missed only one game, completed 68% of his passes, thrown 133 touchdowns against 40 interceptions, and posted a 102.3 passer rating.

In even-numbered years, in 25 games, posted a passer rating of 91.6 with 43 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

"It's a wild contrast that speaks to his overall lack of consistency and durability, and it doesn't favour him in 2026," Gagnon wrote for Bleacher Report.

He has missed 12 games in 2020, five in 2022, and nine in 2024, mainly due to injury.

With the Cowboys giving Prescott a full roster of CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and a retooled defense, staying healthy in 2026 matters more than anything.
