It was a single sentence that sent a shockwave through the league's hierarchy. And this statement from Stephen Jones had every NFL front office take notice.
The Cowboys COO was interviewed on Mad Dog Sports Radio on May 6, 2026
"Dak Prescott, he's just, you know, obviously we feel like he's one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the league.
Last season, Prescott threw for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions, even though Dallas finished 7-9-1. These are stats that hold up against any quarterback in the league. Jones wasn’t just backing his guy; he was making a case based on production.

There are many QB’s currently that are in the conversation for the best, including Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. But by challenging this, the Cowboys have put the other 31 teams on notice that their championship window remains wide open through Prescott’s elite play.
Jones went a step further, making it clear that Prescott’s supporting cast is part of the equation as much as him.
"You've got a great tight end room led by Jake Ferguson; the offensive line group is strong. And of course, we've got Javonte Williams. His signing back. So we just felt like the pieces were in place for that offense to only get better. And certainly Coach Schottenheimer is one of the top offensive minds in this league."
The Cowboys' offense ranked second in total offense at 391.9 yards per game in 2025. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens combined for more than 2,500 receiving yards last season. Williams signed a three-year, $24 million extension in February.
But Jones’ bold move of putting Prescott in the same conversation as the league’s best brings a fair question: How long can they count on him to play at that level?
The answer to that question might currently exist as an ongoing solution.
Dak Prescott and the Cowboys are heading toward a Big Deal
Prescott completed 4,552 passing yards during his 2025 season after his 2024 season ended due to a hamstring injury, and he led the league with 404 completed passes, making him one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL for that season.
Pro Football Focus ranked him the No. 5 quarterback overall. His performance at age 33 has established a strong foundation for him to receive a new contract this upcoming offseason.
As per CBS Sports, the Cowboys plan to create a new contract deal to refinance their current debt obligations instead of allowing Prescott to complete his existing contract.
The Dallas Cowboys want to avoid the lengthy negotiations that made their previous contract talks difficult because their current intention is to execute a market-leading extension.
