Colin Cowherd Calls Jerry Jones ‘Cheap’ & Blames Him for Cowboys’ Failures

The Dallas Cowboys have been failing to meet expectations under owner and GM Jerry Jones in recent years. While the offense is paying dividends, their defense did collapse last season. Moreover, they have missed the playoffs consecutively over the last two years.

Sports analyst Colin Cowherd feels the same. Speaking exclusively on his podcast, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, he shares his reasons.

"There are three things in life you should never go cheap on: transportation, toilet paper, and headcoaches in the NFL," said Cowherd," And Jerry goes cheap on the last one. He hires guys that nobody else is looking to give a head coaching job to."

Continuing his argument, Cowherd pointed to the coaching market surrounding several Cowboys figures. He noted that Jason Garrett was not receiving opportunities elsewhere, McCarthy was on the sidelines, and Schottenheimer was not interviewing for offensive coordinator jobs.

Garrett was fired mid‑season in 2021 from the New York Giants.McCarthy followed a similar trajectory. He was fired by Green Bay in 2018 and did not get much interest before Jerry Jones hired him.

Schottenheimer, too, is known as a career assistant with prior OC stints (Jets, Rams, Seahawks). Cowherd stressed that Jones always chooses the cheaper and familiar option without any regard for the market demand.

However, Cowherd's comment didn't sit well with NFL analyst and Cowboys insider Jared A'Latorre.

NFL Analyst Pushes Back on Colin Cowherd's Cowboys Criticism

Colin Cowherd's words about the Cowboys didn't land well with NFL analyst Jared A'Latorre of Fansided's Sport DFW. First, a dig at the owner, Jerry Jones, and then at the team itself.

Cowherd also said, "The Cowboys don't win big games because they don't play in them anymore."

Calling Cowherd's analysis "wrong as it gets," A'Latorre gives his unfiltered verdict. He draws Cowherd's attention to the Kansas City Chiefs and Cowboys games and their viewership history.

"The Thanksgiving Day game was the second-highest average viewership in NFL history with 57.3M viewers? Oh, and spoiler alert, the Cowboys did end up winning that game, despite Cowherd's comments," says A'Latorre

He further goes on to add that the Cowboys are the most valued franchise with a $13 billion net worth, and this comes from Forbes.

The last two seasons didn't really go in their favor, with a 7-10 record in 2024 and the 2025 season with a 7-9-1 record, but they also did get wins. Despite being out of championship contention, the club's goodwill hasn't dipped by any means.
