Patrick Mahomes is racing against the clock to prove his torn ACL won't derail Kansas City's Super Bowl window. But as expectations continue to rise in Kansas City, the Chiefs' biggest storyline is placing even more pressure on their franchise quarterback.

According to NFL Nation reporter Nate Taylor, the Kansas City Chiefs’ success is dependent on how fast their quarterback Patrick Mahomes will catch up after his return from the torn ACL. 

“How quickly will Patrick Mahomes progress to get the Chiefs back to being contenders? Since his season-ending injury in December,” Taylor wrote. “The starting QB has made it his mission to be ready for Week 1, when the Chiefs host the Denver Broncos on ‘Monday Night Football’….”

While writing about the preview of the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the training camp, NFL Nation’s Nate Taylor raises concerns over the return timeline set by Patrick Mahomes.

The QB is making steady progress and is expected to return earlier than others who suffered a torn ACL, in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.

In the previous season, Chiefs QB Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025.

Before his injury, he appeared in 14 games and threw for 3,587 yards and scored 22 TDs. 

Taylor also highlighted that if the Chiefs want to keep up with their expectations of lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy, they need their star QB back on the gridiron. 

He argued that the Chiefs have to find ways to keep their QB safe during camp while giving him maximum exposure ahead of the 2026 regular season. 

As Patrick Mahomes is gearing up to set foot in training camp, NFL analyst Albert Breer gave his take on Mahomes' return.

Analyst urges Chiefs to stay patient with Patrick Mahomes' recovery

Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated highlighted his concerns about Mahomes' eagerness to return and advised the Chiefs to remain cautious and prioritize his long-term health over rushing him back.

During the OTAs in May, Mahomes fully participated in the 7-on-7 drill, however, the Chiefs restricted him from taking part in 11-on-11 team drills.

Breer noted that Kansas City must continue striking that balance throughout training camp, ensuring Mahomes gets enough work to be ready for the regular season without exposing him to unnecessary risk. 

The approach could even include limiting his preseason action if it helps preserve his health for the games that matter most.

With Super Bowl expectations once again surrounding the Chiefs, Breer believes patience will be just as important as progress as Mahomes prepares for his anticipated return to the field.
