Taking an unexpected turn, the Brendan Sorsby saga officially came to an end as the star quarterback moved on to pursue his goal of playing professional football in the NFL.

Ahead of the 2026 football season, the Red Raiders QB, Brendan Sorsby, and Texas Tech have mutually decided to part ways on Monday night, with him heading for the NFL supplemental draft, which abruptly ends a fight that should not have been started in the first place.

An insider said that Sorsby was “done fighting”, per Matt Hayes of USA Today.

The decision came within a week when a Texas court judge surprisingly granted a temporary injunction to Sorsby that protects his eligibility against the NCAA guidelines related to gambling in collegiate athletes.

Amid the controversy row, Texas Tech took a lot of beating from the NCAA community, including fellow colleges.

With immediate effect, universities like Nebraska, Georgia, and Michigan announced they would cancel scheduled games against Texas Tech.

It also started when Brendan Sorbsy came out clean about his addiction to betting, for which he completed a 35-day inpatient rehab procedure.

But even after coming out clean, the NCAA's strict no-tolerance rules kept haunting him to date.

Sorsby had two options: either wait for the NCAA to conclude its investigations and face a ban or surrender his collegiate football eligibility and head to the NFL supplemental draft to continue playing football.

It comes as a big relief for Sorsby and Texas Tech in terms of legal battles that their star QB is heading to the NFL.

Chairman Cody Campbell also released the official statement defending Texas Tech amid the controversy.

Cody Campbell Breaks Silence on Brendan Sorsby’s Surprise Departure

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby was not the only one who took heat from the football community. The other name, Cody Campbell, chairman of the Board of Texas Tech University, also found himself under scrutiny.

With the recent development, he publicly defended Texas Tech's firm stance by making it clear that the University followed the NCAA code of conduct to the point while standing by their star quarterback.

"The bottom line is that Texas Tech did absolutely nothing but act with complete integrity through this entire process," Campbell wrote. "We broke no rules, no laws, and crossed no ethical lines.”

Amid rumours of being boycotted by other universities, Campbell wrote a lengthy letter directed to the Texas Tech community, addressing the Sorsby saga, and came out clean on the university’s role in it.

In the letter, he highlighted that the university followed the standard operating procedure of background checks as per NCAA guidelines upon Sorsby’s arrival at the university.

The departure of the star Red Raiders QB to the NFL will definitely leave a void in their roster, but it happened for everyone’s good.
