Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is under intense scrutiny after an injunction hearing against the NCAA on Monday. He is currently facing a permanent lifetime ban over sports betting violations.
Sorsby’s legal team is attempting to secure his eligibility for the 2026 season. Senior Judge Ken Curry heard the arguments but didn't rule immediately. Sorsby needs a decision fast.
"In a court filing last week, the NCAA stated granting the injunction would have 'destabilizing ramifications' by making the NCAA 'the first and only major sports league in America to allow an athlete to compete after betting on his own games,'" as per Pete Nakos writing for ON3.

According to Fox News, court documents allege that Sorsby placed more than 2,900 wagers worth around $30,000. The filings further claim that he later continued betting through proxy accounts tied to family and friends, pushing his total wagering amount to roughly $90,000.
He also placed at least 40 bets on Indiana football while he was actively on the Hoosiers' roster.
The potential ban is a significant setback for Texas Tech following its investment in the quarterback. Boosters and local collectives went all-in.
Brendan Sorsby was the No. 1-ranked transfer in January. He accumulated 7,208 passing yards and scored 82 total touchdowns over his four seasons at Cincinnati and Indiana combined, as per ESPN.
This gave Texas Tech enough reason to sign him to a major NIL package valued north of $5 million. But now, that massive financial investment is completely stuck in legal proceedings.
What's worse is that HC Joey McGuire faces an on-field disaster. Because Will Hammond, the projected backup, is also recovering from a torn ACL. Hammond is not expected to be ready for live games until roughly Week 3.
"Badly Misunderstood": Brendan Sorsby's Defense Confronts Looming Court Decision
Sorsby's lead attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, explicitly argued that the entire situation is being heavily mischaracterized by collegiate sports administrators.
“The case is badly misunderstood because he never bet on games he actually played in, meaning there was absolutely zero threat to competitive integrity or any game-fixing,” Kessler said, according to Fox News.
A massive ruling is looming after Senior Judge Ken Curry took the arguments under advisement following the intense two-hour hearing.
Sorsby's camp is tracking the clock closely because NFL franchises are evaluating the quarterback's legal mess ahead of the upcoming summer draft deadlines. This includes the Cleveland Browns.
"I think that's a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right? In terms of the situation he's [put] himself in, we all know what that is," Browns' HC Todd Monken commented, as per Daniel Oyefusi writing for TSN. "And we've seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports."
For now, all eyes are on Judge Curry's upcoming decision. A ruling in Sorsby's favor could keep his college career alive and give Texas Tech's season a much-needed boost. If not, the Red Raiders could lose their prized offseason addition before he ever takes a snap,
