Purdy missed a major portion of the 2025 season due to injuries sustained to his shoulder and toe. However, Kubiak discusses how he wants Purdy to improve in certain areas before the 2026 season.

“I wouldn’t say it’s one thing,” Kubiak said, as per X post of 49ers on NBCS.

Kubiak added that Purdy is an athletic guy and is quick with his feet. However, he is missing out on the chances to display his potential.

“But are you missing an opportunity to make a better play down the field, maybe because you decided to run, or you moved a certain way, and you missed a guy down the field?” Kubiak said during the 49ers’ rookie minicamp.

Purdy’s turf toe injury sidelined him for eight games from Week 1 of the 2025 season. He came back in Week 11, recording 197 of 284 passes for 2,167 yards for the remainder of the season.

“There were some weird setbacks in his season that I think had to do with his injury,” Kubiak added. “He came out, had an awesome camp, had an awesome first week, then he had the injury. Then he comes back from the injury, and you could tell it took him a while to kind of get back to feeling 100 percent.”

He completed 919 out of 1353 passes for 11,685 yards in 49 appearances across four seasons with the 49ers.

Kubiack wants Purdy to be more ‘effective from within the pocket’ this offseason. He wanted him to find ways where he can ‘move in the pocket to find throwing lanes’.

Kubiak also wants Purdy to be more consistent in the pocket area and work on the pocket movement.

HC Kyle Shanahan is reportedly working closely with Brock Purdy this offseason. Purdy watches his clips and improves on them, making him easy to coach, as Shanahan mentioned during the NFL Annual League Meeting earlier this year.

With both coaches heavily involved in Brock Purdy’s development, one NFL analyst projects him to have his best season yet.

NFL Insider Shares Surprising Brock Purdy Outlook

ESPN expert Mike Clay projected Purdy to be the passing yards leader in 2026 with 4,284 yards. This number will put him well ahead of veteran QBs Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and reigning MVP Matthew Stafford.

Arijit Das NFL Draft 2026: Where Every QB Landed in the Draft
The 2026 NFL Draft in April reshaped the league’s future, with 10 college quarterbacks hearing their names called. From an Indiana Hoosiers product going first overall to Las Vegas, to late-round steals, teams prioritized specific traits and college touchdown production to find their next offensive leaders. John Mersits/IMAGO
The Raiders selected the Indiana standout first overall. Mendoza brings a high football IQ, quick processing, and elite clutch poise to Las Vegas. He threw 41 touchdowns in 2025, showing exceptional accuracy when pressured in the red zone. Scott Stuart/IMAGO
Los Angeles selected the Alabama product with the 13th overall pick. Simpson offers strong processing speed, solid pocket presence, and great footwork in structured offenses. He tossed 28 touchdowns during his 2025 season, flashing excellent touch and anticipation. Zach Bolinger/IMAGO
Arizona selected the Miami signal-caller 65th overall. Beck relies on his vast college experience and undeniable arm talent to beat defenses. He threw 30 touchdowns during his 2025 campaign, proving he can command an offense at a high level. John Mersits/IMAGO
Pittsburgh drafted the Penn State prospect 76th overall. While an injury limited his 2025 season to just eight touchdowns, scouts love his size, mobility, and raw arm strength. He projects as a high-upside developmental passer for the Steelers. Zach Bolinger/IMAGO
New York took the Clemson dual-threat at pick 110. Known for extending broken plays and leaning on his starting experience, Klubnik accounted for 16 touchdowns in 2025. The Jets hope to refine his raw athletic tools behind their veterans. Greg Atkins/IMAGO
Philadelphia selected the North Dakota State star 178th overall. As a first-time FCS starter, Payton flashed elite dual-threat ability. He dominated defenses in 2025 by throwing 16 passing touchdowns and rushing for an incredible 13 additional scores. Russell Hons/IMAGO
Cleveland drafted the Arkansas athlete 182nd overall. Boasting impressive size and combine-testing speed, Green hurts defenses with his legs and arm. He recorded 19 passing touchdowns and eight rushing scores during his explosive 2025 college season. Brent Soule/IMAGO
Washington chose the Rutgers quarterback 223rd overall. A multi-year college starter with proven volume production, Kaliakmanis brings solid arm talent to the Commanders. He steadily improved his efficiency, tossing 20 touchdowns during his 2025 campaign. Vincent Carchietta/IMAGO
New England grabbed the Texas Tech leader 234th overall. Morton excels at ball security and efficient decision-making against Big 12 defenses. He finished his 2025 season with 22 touchdowns, proving he can protect the football while moving the chains. Fred Kfoury III/IMAGO
Kansas City selected the LSU pocket passer 249th overall. Though a 2025 injury limited him to 12 touchdowns in nine games, Nussmeier possesses a strong pedigree and elite accuracy. The Chiefs added a high-ceiling backup with proven passing traits. Jonathan Mailhes/IMAGO

He had his best campaign in 2023, completing 308 of 444 passes for 4,280 yards. However, this number doesn’t come off as unreachable for the 2023 Pro Bowler.

According to a report from Sports Illustrated, Purdy can be the top player in passing yards only if he plays all 17 games.

On recovering from his injury, Prudy will enter the 2026 season along with new WR Mike Evans.

The San Francisco 49ers will still need strong yards-after-catch production for Brock Purdy to reach those passing numbers, as projected by Clay.

4 NFL Teams Want to Sign QB Under NCAA Investigation   https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/four-nfl-teams-want-to-sign-qb-who-under-ncaa-investigation/ Sat, 09 May 2026 16:59:33 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=104330 On May 8, a top 2027 NFL Draft prospect came under NCAA investigation tied to a gambling addiction. Despite the issues, four NFL teams are willing to sign the Texas Tech QB, surprising the league and analysts alike.

During a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Eisen and NFL Insider Albert Breer discussed the Brendan Sorsby eligibility crisis in detail.

Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby has been suggested as a Supplemental Draft Pick for 2026. This would only happen if the NCAA does not revoke his eligibility. He is currently undergoing residential treatment for gambling addiction.

“But I cannot believe that the first supplemental draft choice in seven years will most likely be used in this quarterback-needy league”, Eisen said.

He also discussed how NFL teams still prioritized quarterback talent despite concerns surrounding the players’ legal and behavioral issues.

The last player selected in the NFL Supplemental Draft was Jalen Thompson. The Arizona Cardinals chose him in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

NFL Insider Alber Breer identified the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Miami Dolphins as the teams actively monitoring the situation.

His elite arm talent makes the teams offer a second-round pick. Without the scandal, he likely would have entered the 2027 NFL Draft as the first overall pick.

Sorsby lives up to Eisen’s claim of ‘talent over everything’ with his production in his collegiate career. He completed 207 of 336 passes, throwing for 2,800 yards and 36 total touchdowns in 12 games played in 2025.

The Jets are evaluating Sorsby for a long-term option, as Geno Smith serves as a low-cost bridge starter. According to ESPN’s Tony Grossi, the Browns are putting in the work due to Sorsby’s athleticism and arm talent.

The Dolphins are evaluating Sorsby to be a high-upside developmental option behind Malik Willis. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are seeking prospective QB options, despite drafting Miami QB Carson Beck.

Despite the off-field controversy, Sorsby’s talent continues to attract serious NFL interest.

Sorsby Investigated by Ohio State Gambling Regulators

The University of Cincinnati filed a lawsuit against Sorsby for allegedly breaching an 18-month, multimillion-dollar NIL contract.

The 2026 NFL Draft concluded this past weekend in Pittsburgh, leaving several franchises with glaring holes on their depth charts. Front offices must now pivot to the veteran open market. From a 42-year-old quarterback deciding on his future to All-Pro receivers seeking new homes, these 15 unsigned veterans offer immediate starting experience for contenders finalizing their summer rosters. Scott Coleman/IMAGO
The Miami receiver landed on injured reserve last season after catching 21 passes for 265 yards and a single touchdown across four starts. Healthy again this spring, the speedster seeks a new offense to prove he remains elite. Kim Hukari/IMAGO
Operating as New England’s top target all year, Diggs pulled in 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns over 17 games. The veteran wideout hit free agency this offseason looking for another chance at a playoff ring. Fred Kfoury III/IMAGO
The Detroit left tackle logged significant snaps early last season, appearing in 14 games for the Lions before suffering an injury. Now fully recovered on the open market, teams needing blindside protection can pursue his proven blocking skills today. Scott W. Grau/IMAGO
Washington relied heavily on this talented cornerback through nine games before the Commanders released him. He recorded 27 tackles, broke up seven passes, and grabbed one interception. Secondary-needy franchises will undoubtedly want his ball-hawking ability in their defensive backfields. Amanda Coll/IMAGO
Splitting his nine appearances between Dallas and Green Bay last fall, this corner tallied 27 combined tackles without a single interception. Seeking a fresh start now, he hopes a new defensive scheme restores his previously dominant coverage production. Melissa Tamez/IMAGO
Suiting up for just seven games in Tennessee, Sneed registered 26 tackles and three pass deflections. Despite failing to snag an interception last season, his physical man-coverage skills make him a sound addition for contenders building stronger secondaries. John Rivera/IMAGO
Playing 16 games for Washington, Samuel caught 72 passes for 727 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for another score. After six seasons with the 49ers, this was his first season with the Commanders. Samuel is one of the sound offensive weapons still available. Jeff Scudder/IMAGO
The Arizona right tackle started nine games before an unfortunate shoulder surgery ended his November. Fully cleared for action this spring, he hits free agency offering dependable edge protection to quarterbacks needing crucial extra time in the pocket. John Byrum/IMAGO
Cleveland deployed this veteran right tackle in eight games last season. The Browns officially released him on March 12, 2026. Available again today, Conklin brings a vital championship pedigree and heavy-handed blocking techniques to any front office. Frank Jansky/IMAGO
Starting nearly every snap across 17 games for Cleveland last fall, the veteran guard anchored their interior running schemes perfectly. Bitonio’s contract was officially voided on March 11, 2026, resulting in a massive $23.5 million dead cap hit for the Browns. Andy Lewis/IMAGO
Tampa Bay started this pass rusher in 12 games, recording 31 total tackles and two-and-a-half sacks. His overall numbers dipped slightly last season, where he recorded 14 total tackles and one snap across 10 games (for the Jets). Jefferee Woo/IMAGO
The athletic Cleveland tight end caught 33 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns during 11 starts last year. TIll 2025, Njoku played a total of nine seasons with the Browns. Eager to maximize his red-zone targets, he enters free agency searching for an offensive system. Christopher Szagola/IMAGO
Guiding Pittsburgh through a gritty campaign, Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns and 3,322 yards across 16 appearances. The legend remains unsigned this April, forcing worried franchises to wonder if the brilliant 42-year-old quarterback will sign for one final championship push. Frank Jansky/IMAGO
Buffalo utilized Bosa expertly to create havoc, resulting in 29 total tackles, five sacks, and a staggering five forced fumbles. Defenses trying to disrupt modern passing attacks will eagerly bid for Bosa’s edge-rushing power. Derek Regensburger/IMAGO
The versatile Pittsburgh target snagged 38 balls for 222 yards and two touchdowns while adding 70 rushing yards. Currently exploring free agency, he offers creative offensive coordinators a unique chess piece. John Mersits/IMAGO

According to a report from The Athletic, he has been placed under NCAA investigation after allegedly placing thousands of online sports bets on multiple sportsbook apps.

Reportedly, some of the wagers were made on Indiana football games. He was an active member of the team from 2022-2023, which directly violates the NCAA rules, permanently impacting his college eligibility.

The suit filed by the University of Cincinnati seeks $1 million in liquidated damages, as he transferred to Texas Tech before his contract expiry in 2026. He is also sued for allowing Texas Tech to use his likeness on a Times Square billboard.

However, Sorsby is represented by sports law attorney Jeffrey Kessler in a bid to claim his college eligibility. If his loses his lawsuit, the NFL Supplemental draft becomes the next viable step, as Breer explained.

With his college eligibility and legal situation both under scrutiny, Sorsby’s future may ultimately depend on the NCAA’s ruling.

Ex-South Carolina QB Shares Concerning Medical Update https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/ex-south-carolina-qb-shares-concerning-medical-update/ Sat, 09 May 2026 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=102283 Former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback updated his fans on a major medical concern he has been facing recently.

The 38-year-old Stephen Garcia posted on his Facebook on May 6, revealing that he has been battling Stage 4 colorectal cancer.

“Wasn’t overly excited to share this news but it is what it is. We have a great team of doctors and staff that’s confident we can beat this! It’s the only option,” he wrote.

He also warned everyone about ultra-processed foods, PFAS, and microplastics that have been impacting people in their late thirties, and suggested getting checked if any symptoms or signs occur.

“If there’s one lesson to be learned, get checked and don’t be afraid to visit the doctors office when you don’t feel 100%. The stuff we consume has been altered significantly over the years and we’ve been hearing more and more people in this age range are getting diagnosed with these things,” he further wrote.

Garcia also mentioned a book on Navy Seals, titled No Easy Day, which had inspired him to deal with things one day at a time. He called it “just another battle”, adding that he was “built for this kind of an operation.”

Overall, it seems Garcia is optimistic and is maintaining a positive outlook while fighting the disease and all that comes with its treatment. He ended the post with a heartfelt appreciation for his fans.

“We got this and I appreciate all yall!” Garcia concluded.

The post also included a GoFundMe page set up by his wife, Maria Garcia, to help fight and beat the cancer.

Along with photos of Stephen Garcia through the years and in the hospital, the page also included details about “the most aggressive treatment path” available to defeat the cancer, which has been recommended for Garcia.

Latest Report Claims Fernando Mendoza Should Be Benched by Raiders https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/latest-report-claims-fernando-mendoza-should-be-benched-by-raiders/ Sat, 09 May 2026 03:53:51 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=102000 A new report has emerged around the No. 1 overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft, Fernando Mendoza. It suggests that the rookie shouldn’t be rushed into starting games this season.

NFL reporter Henry McKenna of FOX Sports urged the Las Vegas Raiders to ease Mendoza into the 2026 NFL season matchups behind veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“The Las Vegas Raiders could slot veteran Kirk Cousins into the QB1 spot and no one would give it a second thought. There would be no pressure. No stress. No reason to push the young quarterback, especially not when the team’s offensive line [while rebuilt] was as bad as it was last year,” McKenna wrote.

Last season, the Raiders recorded a 3–14 record, as their offense was one of the worst in franchise history. They ranked 32nd in the league with 14.2 points per game and 77.5 rushing yards per game.

The team hired a new head coach, Klint Kubiak, who drafted RB Mike Washington Jr. in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Kubiak also signed OL Spencer Burford in free agency, along with several other moves.

However, there are still gaps that need to be addressed for this season. And starting a rookie quarterback behind a struggling offensive line could hinder his long-term development.

McKenna further mentioned that, according to FOX Sports Research, 16 QBs have been drafted No. 1 overall in the past 20 years. What’s more, every one of them has started games in their rookie season.

If the Raiders were to take his suggestion, they would be breaking a two-decade-long tradition. And it seems the franchise might be doing just that.

A minority owner of the franchise, Tom Brady, discussed the “tragedy” of QBs starting games in their rookie year back in 2024 during an appearance on The Stephen A. Smith Show.

Raiders HC Klint Kubiak also mentioned the importance of not letting a rookie start from Day 1 during the 2026 NFL Combine.

“Ideally, you don’t want him to start from Day 1. You’d love him to be able to learn behind somebody,” Kubiak said. “I think it does help the player if they can sit behind a mature adult and watch how they run the show.”

The Raiders have also signed veteran QB Kirk Cousins in free agency. This has led to speculation about the franchise planning to let an experienced QB start in the upcoming season instead of the No. 1 pick, Fernando Mendoza.

In the past, other franchises have also considered the benefits of letting the rookies watch and learn first. The Raiders definitely wouldn’t be the first team in the NFL to bench a rookie QB.

Times When Rookie Quarterbacks Were Benched For Veterans

Carson Palmer was taken No. 1 overall in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, but he didn’t see the field at all during his rookie season. Instead, he spent the year learning behind veteran Jon Kitna.

Darshanbir Singh USA Today NFL Draft Rankings: Top Prospects After Fernando Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza owns the 2026 draft’s top quarterback spot after leading Indiana to an undefeated season and claiming the Heisman Trophy. His 72% completion rate and 41 touchdowns were elite. But seven signal-callers behind him are fighting to prove they belong in the same conversation. Thomas J. Russo/ Imago
Klubnik completed 257 of 392 passes in 2025, finishing at 65.6% with 2,943 yards. He threw 16 touchdowns against 6 interceptions while adding 94 rushing yards and 4 scores on the ground. PFF graded him 78.9 overall with an 80.3 passing mark, placing him 90th and 58th among college quarterbacks. Imago
Klubnik’s quick release and rhythm accuracy work best when he’s protected and operating within structure. He showed dual-threat flashes with his legs but struggled the moment pressure arrived. His tools project more as a backup with upside in the right scheme than a day-one starter. Zach Bolinger/ Iconsportswire/ Imago
Beck posted 338 completions on 467 attempts for 72.4% accuracy in his Miami debut season. He threw for 3,813 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while adding 43 rushing yards and 2 scores. PFF assigned him a 76.3 overall grade and 78.8 passing grade, ranking 110th and 70th nationally. Doug Murray/ Iconsportswire/ Imago
Beck improved his accuracy and touch operating in rhythm offenses where anticipation matters more than arm strength. He stands over 6’4″ with solid poise when the pocket stays clean. The problem surfaces when pressure arrives. He lacks elite velocity and needs structure to maximize his timing-based strengths. Zach Bolinger/ Iconsportswire/ Imago
Allar completed 103 of 159 passes across roughly six games before a season-ending injury. He finished at 64.8% with approximately 1,100 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. His rushing added 172 yards and 1 score on 36 carries. PFF graded him 72.4 overall with a 66.1 passing mark, placing him 142nd and 178th among quarterbacks. Matthew O Haren/ Imago
Allar brings impressive size at 6’5″ and 235 pounds with raw arm talent that draws Josh Allen comparisons. He showed good anticipation, touch, and competitiveness when healthy. The issues lie in his mechanics and awareness, which led to risky throws that better defenses punished. Zach Bolinger/ Iconsportswire/ Imago
Green connected on 198 of 326 passes for 60.7% completion in 2025. He threw for 2,714 yards with 19 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. His rushing numbers stood out with 139 carries for 777 yards and 8 scores. PFF graded him 82.5 overall but only 65.6 as a passer due to turnover-worthy plays. Richey Miller/ Imago
Green stands 6’6″ and moves like a running back when he takes off. He’s the best pure athlete in this quarterback class with a strong arm that can hit every level of the field. His dual-threat ability creates game-changing plays against defenses. The downside shows up in his mechanics and decision-making, which need serious work. Brent Soule/ Imago
Nussmeier completed 194 of 288 passes for 67.4% accuracy across roughly nine games. A core injury limited him to 1,927 yards with 12 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He rushed 29 times for negative 57 yards and 1 score. PFF graded him 77.1 overall with a 76.4 passing mark, ranking 101st nationally and 86th, respectively. Jonathan Mailhes/ Imago
Nussmeier brings high football IQ and anticipation that rhythm offenses love. His NFL arm talent shows up on tape when he’s healthy and operating in timing systems. He processes quickly and has enough mobility to extend plays. The gunslinger mentality adds upside but also leads to risky throws, especially with his smaller frame under pressure. Stephen Lew/ Imago
Simpson completed 305 of 473 passes for 64.5% in 2025. He threw for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns against 5 interceptions while adding 93 rushing yards and 2 scores on 90 carries. PFF graded him 87.7 overall with an 84.7 passing mark, ranking 32nd among quarterbacks. Charles Baus/ Imago
Simpson shows strong pocket awareness, timing, and a quick release that gets the ball out before pressure arrives. His short-to-intermediate accuracy ranks among the class’s best with excellent processing speed. He’s a good athlete for the position with enough poise to handle NFL complexity. Javier Rojas/ Imago
Mendoza completed 273 of 379 passes for 72.0% in 2025. He threw for approximately 3,535 yards with 41 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions. His rushing added 276 yards and 7 scores. PFF graded him 87.9 overall, with passing grades between 83.7 and 90.7, depending on opponent strength Thomas J. Russo/ Imago
Mendoza stands 6’4″ and 236 pounds with an elite processor and high football IQ that separates him from every quarterback in this class. His strong arm combines with exceptional anticipation and accuracy under pressure to create big-time throws when games matter most. He dominates from clean pockets while showing enough mobility to make plays when protection breaks down. Zach Bolinger/ Iconsportswire/ Imago

Patrick Mahomes is another strong example of this. Even though he wasn’t a No. 1 overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs selected him 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Despite being a rookie, he spent most of the season behind veteran Alex Smith and only made his first start in Week 17.

The Green Bay Packers have followed a similar path for years. They let Aaron Rodgers develop behind Brett Favre before eventually handing him the job, and later did the same by allowing Jordan Love to sit behind Rodgers.

Hopefully, the Raiders will make the right QB1 decision for the upcoming season.

Aaron Rodgers’ Next Move Confirmed As Veteran QB Set To Visit Pittsburgh https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/aaron-rodgers-next-move-confirmed-as-veteran-qb-set-to-visit-pittsburgh/ Sat, 09 May 2026 02:20:27 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=103354 The wait might finally be over for the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Aaron Rodgers reportedly set to visit them over the weekend.

As per NFL Network reporter Kevin Patra, the future Hall of Famer is potentially re-signing with the team.

“Rodgers, who is expected to visit the Steelers on Friday and this weekend, will likely play for them in 2026, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday, per sources,” Patra wrote.

Rapoport also stated that Rodgers has not officially signed with the Steelers, even though both sides seem interested.

After not receiving a reply from the ten-time Pro Bowler by the start of the NFL Draft, Steelers owner Art Rooney made another statement via NFL Network last Wednesday.

“Even though I thought it probably would have been concluded by now, I think we will come to a conclusion here in the next few weeks.”

Credits: IMAGO

And it seems this time the prediction might come true.

The Steelers also placed the rarely used UFA tender on Rodgers to secure a compensatory draft pick if he were to sign with another team following the NFL Draft. This would give Rodgers about a 10% raise from his 2025 salary of $13.7 million, bringing it to around $15 million.

But Rodgers might not play for that amount, and even Rapoport admitted that was “hard to imagine.”

Former Steelers QB Charlie Batch also said on his Snap Count podcast that Rodgers’ representatives would likely push for something closer to a $30 million deal after the kind of season he had in 2025.

However, there are rumors that Aaron Rodgers is already in a secret deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Has Rodgers Already Made An Inside Deal With The Steelers?

At the age of 42, Aaron Rodgers is still one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL.

In the 2025 season, he recorded 3,322 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to an AFC North title and a playoff berth.

The Steelers still have confidence that he will be the one to take the team to a playoff win and perhaps even a Super Bowl victory. So, the rumors of a “private agreement” between both sides emerging were not too far-fetched.

However, Ian Rapoport confirmed via a Good Morning Football segment with Kyle Brandt that those rumors were exactly that, rumors.

“I don’t get the sense there was like a private agreement. I think it was more like, ‘Trust this process.’ It was good last year for him. It was good last year for us,” Rapoport revealed.

So, now the only thing that remains to be seen is when Rodgers will make an official agreement with the Steelers.

Career Backup QB Who earned $20M Retires at 33 https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/career-backup-qb-who-earned-twenty-m-retires-at-thirty-three/ Fri, 08 May 2026 16:27:35 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=103215 A 33-year-old backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers announced his retirement after earning over $20 million during his final years in the NFL.

Taylor Heinicke announced on his Instagram that he is retiring after playing for seven years in the NFL.

“For 25 years, I had the pleasure to play this great sport of football … It has taught me a lot, not only about myself, but about life as well,” Heinicke wrote, according to Adam Schefter’s X post.

Across his seven years in the NFL, Heinicke logged snaps for five teams, including Washington, Houston, Carolina, and Atlanta.

“Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold,” Schefter’s X post further read, revealing Heinicke’s message. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would’ve been able to live this life.”

After going undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings gave him a chance to join the NFL and signed him to compete for the backup quarterback role behind Teddy Bridgewater. He eventually became the third-string quarterback.

But his peak didn’t come until the 2020 season, during the wild-card round playoff matchup (his only playoff appearance) against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the 31-23 loss, he completed 26 of 44 passes for 306 yards and also recorded 46 rushing yards after their then-QB1, Dwayne Haskins, was released and Alex Smith sustained a calf injury.

After that, he signed a two-year, $4.75 million contract extension and was named the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders. He justified that trust by recording 3,419 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.

After his stint with the Washington Commanders, Taylor Heinicke signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, serving as their backup quarterback before being traded to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Thank you to all who have supported me in this journey,” his message further read. “Thank you all who have believed in me. And thank you to those who gave me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream. Excited for this next chapter of my life! And always, Go Skins!”

Alongside the NFL, he also pursued a career in the United Football League.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s Time In The UFL

After Taylor Heinicke accepted an athletic scholarship from Old Dominion University in 2011, he had a strong collegiate career, completing almost 3,500 passing yards.

Despite that performance, he went undrafted in the NFL but was later signed by the Minnesota Vikings.

Before joining the Washington Commanders in 2020, Taylor Heinicke was assigned to the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL. The league placed him on the BattleHawks’ roster during the 2020 XFL Draft, but he never got any playing time and recorded no statistics.

His deal ended when the XFL shut down operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Heinicke returned to the NFL.

Mike Vrabel’s Message to Patriots Locker Room Shared by Drake Maye https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/mike-vrabels-message-to-patriots-locker-room-shared-by-drake-maye/ Fri, 08 May 2026 06:19:00 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=102129 Mike Vrabel shared an optimistic message with the New England Patriots. The message was shared by quarterback Drake Maye when he stood up for his head coach amidst off-field controversies.

According to USA Today’s Chris Bumbaca, Drake Maye shared the message received by the Patriots, suggesting that Vrabel is willing to work on his issues while also trying not to let the Patriots down in the process.

“With my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive. We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions.” Vrabel said.

“That includes me. That starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. You never want to be the cause of a distraction,” the Patriots HC had insisted.

After Page Six published photos of Mike Vrabel and NFL reporter Dianna Russini together, rumors quickly started swirling about whether Vrabel had been unfaithful to his wife.

Both Vrabel and Russini denied the infidelity rumors. But after Russini left The Athletic, Vrabel eventually addressed the controversy himself, taking “personal accountability.”

On the other side, Vrabel’s wife, Jen Vrabel, is reportedly quite unhappy with the media attention cast upon her personal life..

“Jen is p*****, embarrassed, and horrified that this is her life right now. To live through this in the public eye, being judged by friends and family, being judged by people she has never met. It is a nightmare,” a source told the Daily Mail.

However, it seems she is willing to give him another chance. Vrabel is attending counseling with his wife, which even caused him to miss the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Drake Maye continues to support his coach. The QB is confident that Vrabel’s personal issue will not affect the Patriots on the field.

During the Truist Championship Pro-Am, Maye was paired with PGA Tour pro Gary Woodland. Upon being asked whether he believed Vrabel’s controversies would have any negative effects on the Patriots’ performance, Maye gave an optimistic response.

Cowboys COO’s Bold Dak Prescott Statement Puts 31 Teams on Notice https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/cowboys-coos-bold-dak-prescott-statement-puts-31-teams-on-notice/ Fri, 08 May 2026 04:11:17 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=101110 It was a single sentence that sent a shockwave through the league’s hierarchy. And this statement from Stephen Jones had every NFL front office take notice.

The Cowboys COO was interviewed on Mad Dog Sports Radio on May 6, 2026

“Dak Prescott, he’s just, you know, obviously we feel like he’s one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the league.

Last season, Prescott threw for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions, even though Dallas finished 7-9-1. These are stats that hold up against any quarterback in the league. Jones wasn’t just backing his guy; he was making a case based on production.

LANDOVER, MD – DECEMBER 25: Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott 4 stands on the field during a game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders on December 25, 2025, at Northwest Stadium in Landover, MD. There are many QB’s currently that are in the conversation for the best, including Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. But by challenging this, the Cowboys have put the other 31 teams on notice that their championship window remains wide open through Prescott’s elite play.

Jones went a step further, making it clear that Prescott’s supporting cast is part of the equation as much as him.

“You’ve got a great tight end room led by Jake Ferguson; the offensive line group is strong. And of course, we’ve got Javonte Williams. His signing back. So we just felt like the pieces were in place for that offense to only get better. And certainly Coach Schottenheimer is one of the top offensive minds in this league.”

The Cowboys’ offense ranked second in total offense at 391.9 yards per game in 2025. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens combined for more than 2,500 receiving yards last season. Williams signed a three-year, $24 million extension in February.

But Jones’ bold move of putting Prescott in the same conversation as the league’s best brings a fair question: How long can they count on him to play at that level?

The answer to that question might currently exist as an ongoing solution.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys are heading toward a Big Deal

Prescott completed 4,552 passing yards during his 2025 season after his 2024 season ended due to a hamstring injury, and he led the league with 404 completed passes, making him one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL for that season.

Pro Football Focus ranked him the No. 5 quarterback overall. His performance at age 33 has established a strong foundation for him to receive a new contract this upcoming offseason.

As per CBS Sports, the Cowboys plan to create a new contract deal to refinance their current debt obligations instead of allowing Prescott to complete his existing contract.

The Dallas Cowboys want to avoid the lengthy negotiations that made their previous contract talks difficult because their current intention is to execute a market-leading extension.

Where do you think about Prescott’s lands in the QB GOAT list?

Broncos Look to Add Another QB as Veteran NFL Star Invited for Tryout https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/broncos-look-to-add-another-qb-as-veteran-nfl-star-invited-for-tryout/ Fri, 08 May 2026 02:30:09 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=102370 The Denver Broncos might sign another veteran QB following the NFL Draft, as a recent update suggests he has been invited for a tryout.

According to Mike Kils from 9NEWS, veteran QB Nathan Peterman, along with EJ Warner, who went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, was invited by the Broncos to the rookie minicamp tryout.

“Per source, the #Broncos are giving veteran QB Nathan Peterman a rookie minicamp tryout this weekend. Last with Saints, Raiders, Falcons in 2024, Peterman turned 32 on Monday.”

Peterman is coming up after spending time with the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, and his addition to the Broncos could make him the fourth QB on the roster behind Bo Nix, Sam Ehlinger, and Jarrett Stidham.

But with Nix still recovering from an ankle injury and having undergone another cleanup surgery recently, his return as the starting QB is in uncertain territory. So, technically, Peterman could serve as their QB3.

During his time at the University of Pittsburgh, he recorded 2,855 passing yards, 27 TDs, and 7 interceptions to finish his senior year with an 8–5 record.

So, along with his collegiate performance, his NFL Combine measurements, such as a 4.82-second 40-yard dash and a 2.80-second 20-yard split, impressed the Buffalo Bills enough to draft him in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Since then, he has appeared in 15 games, recording 712 passing yards, 4 TDs, and a 53.1% completion rate during his time with the Bills, the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chicago Bears, the New Orleans Saints, and the Falcons.

Now, he’s set to appear in the rookie minicamp tryout, which is scheduled to run from May 8–10, and he will be competing with Fresno State’s EJ Warner.

EJ Warner As Nathan Peterman’s Competition In The Rookie Minicamp

EJ Warner did not get signed by the Kansas City Chiefs after his tryout at their rookie minicamp, following which he received an invitation to the Denver Broncos’.

And given that, during his time at Temple, Rice, and Fresno State, Warner recorded 10,844 passing yards and 71 TDs, he has already proven to be a better option, statistically, than Nathan Peterman.

Warner was also named MVP of the 2025 Arizona Bowl. However, there is another reason why the Broncos might choose EJ Warner for their roster.

“I think this week with Denver, there’s a better shot with where their roster is,” Kurt Warner, father of EJ Warner, said. “And I think Sean Payton’s offense fits very well with how E.J. plays the game.”

So, let’s see what the Broncos have in store for EJ Warner and Nathan Peterman. Tell us what you think about this in the comments.

Saoli Chakraborty 16 New Backup QBs in NFL 2026
The NFL continues to evolve constantly, and backup quarterbacks play an important role more than ever. This slideshow highlights 16 new backup QBs for the 2026 season, showcasing key additions and how they will impact their teams when needed most. Fred Kfoury III/Icon Sportswire
The Arizona Cardinals have moved on from their longtime starter, Kyler Murray, and kept backup QB Jacoby Brissett as a starter. To fill that position, the Cardinals brought in Gardner Minshew as the new backup, who has 23 starts across three teams in the past three seasons, including the Indianapolis Colts (2023) and Las Vegas Raiders (2024), highlighting his ability to step in when needed. David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire
Initially signed as a starter, Kirk Cousins quickly became the most expensive backup in the NFL after the Falcons brought in Michael Penix Jr. Penix scored 3-6 last season and ended with an injury, leaving his status uncertain. He could still reclaim his position, but will face competition from Tagovailoa, who is looking for a bounce back after a disappointing stretch with the Miami Dolphins. Mario Cantu/CSM/Shutterstock
The Bills shifted their quarterback approach in 2026. They have turned to Kyle Allen after previously relying on former No. 2 pick Mitchell Trubisky. Allen brings in 19 career starts and has bounced around five different teams the past five seasons. Jordon Kelly/Icon Sportswire
The Carolina Panthers have moved on from longtime backup Andy Dalton and have Kenny Pickett in his place. He has previously been in Pittsburgh Steelers for two seasons and with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns for another two. Jason/IMAGO
The Cleveland Browns once again find themselves in a questionable quarterback situation as Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders have chances to be the starter this season. In such a case, Deshaun Watson can move in as a backup QB after a year recovering from his Achilles injury. Allan Dranberg/Cal Media
The Dallas Cowboys bring in Sam Howell, who started in 7 games for the Washington Commanders in 2023 before signing a backup role for the past two years. He will compete with Joe Milton for the backup spot behind Dak Prescott. Andy Lewis/Icon Sportswire
Detroit brought back Teddy Bridgewater for the second time into the team after Kyle Allen departed this offseason. Though Jared Goff has been there as a starter for 17 games in the past four seasons, Bridgewater adds as a reliable expert. John Byrum/Icon Sportswire
The Green Bay Packers have Desmond Ridder to step in as Malik Willis departs for the Miami Dolphins as a starter. Ridder needs to prove himself as a backup, as he has just one start over the past two seasons and saw limited action with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. @Desmond Ridder/Instagram
The Kansas City Chiefs have Justin Fields as a backup despite being viewed as a starter in the last three seasons. He lacks consistency even though he has the tools to deliver a winning performance. Kevin/IMAGO
The Las Vegas Raiders appear to be committed to easing Fernando Mendoza into action at the beginning of his rookie season. Hence, Kirk Cousins will potentially begin the season as the starter. No matter who starts, the duo is determined to revamp the 2026 season. Scott/IMAGO
The former NFL starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, is still a free agent, and a reunion with the Los Angeles Rams is still a possibility. With Matthew Stafford back, Garoppolo would serve as a more proven backup option than Stetson Bennett. If Garoppolo departs, Bennett would be a choice alongside Stafford. Jayne/IMAGO
The Minnesota Vikings added Kyler Murray as the new backup option, and this has made the backup situation more competitive. Carson Wentz is re-signed by the team but will potentially be viewed as the third-string option, while Murray or McCarthy will serve as the primary backup. Bailey Hillesheim/Icon Sportswire
The New England Patriots moved on from Joshua Dobbs and re-signed Tommy DeVito on a two-year contract this offseason. DeVito has experience as a starter for 8 games for the New York Giants for two seasons as a backup before joining the Patriots as a third-string option. This season, he has a prominent backup role. @tommydevito/Instagram
The New York Jets struggled with their quarterback position last season between Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields. Head Coach Aaron Glenn already mentioned Geno Smith as the 2026 starter; however, the situation is still uncertain as the Jets want to be in the QB market during the NFL draft. Hence, Brady Cook is considered at the No. 2 spot as a backup option. Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Steelers are awaiting a decision from Aaron Rodgers, which will finalise their entire QB depth chart. If he moves away, Mason Rudolph may step in as the starter with Will Howard as the new backup. Brook Ward / Apparent Media Group
With Cam Ward’s right shoulder injury, the Tennessee Titans opened the door for Brandon Allen as a starter. As a backup, Mitchell Trubisky is added as a more experienced and reliable backup option in the 2026 season. Mike/IMAGO

Patrick Mahomes Named in Lawsuit between NFLPA & Leaf Trading Cards https://www.qbfancentral.com/news/patrick-mahomes-named-in-lawsuit-between-nflpa-leaf-trading-cards/ Thu, 07 May 2026 12:00:20 +0000 https://www.qbfancentral.com/?p=100634 The NFL Players Association filed a lawsuit against Leaf Trading Cards in the U.S. District Court regarding the legal right to use NFL players’ Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes is one of the NFL players whose NIL attributes Leaf Trading Cards is using on its products without a group licensing agreement with the NFLPA, according to Michael McCann of Sportico.

“Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and multiple other players—though not six or more on any individual card—appear in those sets,” McCann wrote.

According to the NFLPA, Leaf Trading Cards allegedly violated the rules by putting the image of six or more players on their trading cards without a license from the association. And, they also failed to get permission from the individual players, even for cards that featured fewer than six players.

While professional players control individual publicity rights through personal deals, the NFLPA maintains exclusive rights for group licensing involving six or more players.

Under this agreement, players earn royalties but forfeit group revenue if they choose to opt out. By allegedly featuring six or more players, Leaf violated the association’s exclusive right.

These products include Leaf Trinity Football, Leaf Eclectic Signature Series Football, Leaf PayDirt Football, and Leaf Metal Football.

Leaf is also set to release unauthorized Leaf Spectacular Football and Leaf Optichrome Football in 2026, which were also included in the complaint made by the NFLPA.

The NFLPA is seeking monetary damages for the past releases and trying to stop further sales of these products that do not include the players’ rights to NIL, photographs, autographs, jersey numbers, and others.

Before the lawsuit, Leaf responded with a written statement, defending itself by saying that the NFLPA’s Group Player Rights didn’t make sense because six or more active NFL players were not used on a single Leaf trading card.

But Leaf did not reach out to the players individually either, which the NFLPA also included in the lawsuit.

What Led to the NFLPA’s Lawsuit Against Leaf Trading Cards

Leaf Trading Cards has operated for years without an official NFL license, according to Bloomberg Law News. Instead, the company signed individual deals with players for autographs and NIL rights while avoiding the use of official NFL logos.

The lawsuit traces back to a licensing shift that began in 2021, when Fanatics signed a 20-year trading card agreement with the NFLPA for group player licensing rights. However, the NFLPA already had an active agreement with Panini, delaying Fanatics’ full control of the license.

The license with Panini finally expired in April 2026, and Fanatics had the exclusive license for making trading cards in the NFL and the NFL Players Association. And so, the NFL Players Association brought its lawsuit against Leaf for using player attributes without permission.
